IN MEMORY OF DR. EKATERINA GENIEVA
It is with profound regret that the founder, board, director and staff of The Ritman Library learned about the passing of Dr. Ekaterina Genieva, Director General of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature, on 9 July 2015 at the age of 69.
The Ritman Library and the Rudomino Library have traditonally enjoyed excellent relations. Our collaboration began in the days of perestroika under the free-spirited and determined aegis of Ekaterina Genieva and Joost R. Ritman, founder of The Ritman Library, when we staged a major exhibition on “500 Years of Gnosis in Western Europe” in 1993. In this unique exhibition, highlights from Russia’s esoteric tradition which had been obscured from the public for so many years were shown in Moscow, later in Saint Petersburg. Throughout the years, a number of major exhibitions and conferences were organized in collaboration with The Ritman Library in Moscow’s Rudomino Library and many plans and initiatives were exchanged. The excellent relations existing between the two libraries for almost a quarter of a century were formalized at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in 2006.
Only a few years ago, in 2013, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our collaboration together in Amsterdam (http://www.ritmanlibrary.com/2013/03/past-present-future-20-years-of-russian-dutch-library-collaboration/). It has always been our common goal to promote cultural exchange and scholarship between Russia and the Netherlands in the field of our cultural history in order to contribute to the strengthening of religious tolerance and of individual freedom of thought which is at the core of Christian-Hermetic gnosis. This tradition is also present in the Religious Department of the Rudomino Library, and we hope that its scholarly research center will be able to continue to make accessible this hitherto largely neglected component of our joint cultural tradition. Finally, we hope the Rudomino Library will be able to welcome a successor as dedicated as Dr Genieva.
